Today I will discuss the most common, non fatal, medical diagnosis low back pain. More money is spent on lumbar spine pain than diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol to name a few. The question today is; does your weight affect whether your back hurts or not?

The answer is yes it can cause your back to hurt. Many other things can cause spine pain as well. You could sprain your back with an injury, arthritis, ruptured discs, osteoporosis and many other conditions as well. Before discussing how your weight could make your low back hurt we need a quick anatomy lesson.

The neck and low back have a loroditic curve; meaning the flex backward and resemble a backward “C.” The mid back flexes forward and has a kyphotic curve and most resembles a forward “C.” The back and spine muscles are more important in maintaining the neck and low backs structural integrity, than the mid back muscles. This is why car accident injuries always seem to injure the neck and low back.

So where does weight fit in? In most obese people they gain abdominal weight, fat, and this puts an added strain on you low back. The added frontal weight throws off your body’s center of gravity and makes your back muscles work harder than they are meant to. Need proof? Go to the store and pick up a 20 lb bag of dog food and walk up and down the isle. Better yet ask any pregnant woman in their 8-9 months; “does your back hurt?“

Lastly very few people specifically exercise their core muscle let alone try to isolate the low back spine muscles. If you don’t exercise them they weaken and are more prone to injury. Even slight back injury or the muscles working to hard, can make the low back muscle squeal with pain. Mild pain can be treated with OTC analgesics like ibuprofen. More severe back pain starts the medical expenses adding up. Beside meds we have physical therapy, X-ray’s, MRI’s, surgery, not to mention hospitalization and time off work.

Imagine if you just lost one 20 lb bag of “dog food”. Your back would hurt less and you would in turn have more energy and become more active. The loss of abdominal weight puts less strain on your low back muscles and they in turn don’t cause you to have pain.

As a Doctor of Chiropractic and joint pain specialist, TMJ pain or jaw pain sufferers are commonplace in my practice. They usually come to me seeking relief after seeing their dentist who was unable to offer any real long-term solution. Typically, bite splints are recommended, after a proper bite alignment has been established, but the problem often persists.

TMJ disorder usually presents with jaw pain when chewing, biting down hard or when opening the mouth widely. The painful chronic condition may also be accompanied by clicking or popping when opening or closing your mouth.

The Major Causes Of TMJ and What I Recommend

While an uneven bite or occlusion is the #1 cause of TMJ pain problems, there are a host of other non-teeth alignment issues at the root of all TMJ jaw pain issues.

For instance, other than the obvious cause of being punched in the jaw, if you are the worrisome type you may be clenching your teeth at night while sleeping.

Another less obvious cause of TMJ is from being involved in a motor vehicle accident where you are hit from behind. The forceful and sudden whiplashing of the head can and often does disrupt the normal anatomy and normal physiology of the jaw hinge work. In this case, I would strongly recommend you see a chiropractor who specialises in TMJ re-alignment and treatment techniques.

This is when a bite splint would be of some help. But, then again, unless you resolve the cause of your teeth grinding in the first place, this solution is rarely very effective in the long run. The real solution is obviously to figure out a way to deal with your stress. Try meditation, yoga, exercise or perhaps taking some Valerian Root before bedtime to help you to relax. It is also a great natural sleep aid for your poor spouse who you’re keeping awake!

Ultimately you will need to deal with whatever it is that is stressing you and resolve it. Either by how you choose deal with it, how you let it affect you or don’t affect you, or to remove the stressful situation altogether.

Another fairly common cause of TMJ pain and problems is habitually chewing gum. This kind of constant stress on the chewing muscles of the jaw, namely the masseter and pterygoid muscles, cause them to become over worked and after a while to become spastic. If this is your problem, stop chewing so much gum and consider taking up another less stressful habit! Alternatively, once you determine which muscles are spastic, you can massage these tight muscles in a back and forth motion for 20-30 seconds routinely throughout the day to help alleviate the spasming.

The masseter muscles are located on each side of your jaw just below the cheek. The pterygoid muscles are located just below the jaw line on each side. In my office I always palpate them to determine if one or both of these muscles are spastic. I usually find that if the masseter or upper muscle is tighter on one side, then the pterygoid or lower muscle is also tighter on the opposite side. I would then demonstrate to the patient how they can perform the massages on their own to help balance the jaw muscles and reduce TMJ pain.

Lastly, a significant but less obvious cause of TMJ is from being involved in a motor vehicle accident where you are hit from behind. The forceful and sudden whiplashing of the head and neck can, and often does, disrupt the anatomy and normal physiology of the jaw hinge. In this case, I would strongly recommend seeing a chiropractor who specialises in TMJ re-alignment and treatment techniques.

For those that experience bodily pain, there is the tendency to seek out any possible solution that may help them to alleviate the pain to some degree. Going to the internet and searching out nonsurgical solutions can tend to be overwhelming. You will run into tons of opinions and many possible solutions. But which ones might work for you? Where do you go when you need pain relief?

Purchasing various devices or solutions (medications or supplements) can tend to be very costly. If your body is experiencing discomfort in any way, then that is your body signaling you that there is a problem. In our culture the typical thing is to want fast relief. We then reach for over the counter medications that in the long run might only make the problem worse. These medications rarely tend to solve the problem, but instead end up masking the true source of the problem. Just because your pain may temporarily go away for a bit does not mean that you have solved the root cause of your pain.

Targeting the cause of the pain is the solution. If your car’s check engine light comes on, do you reach under the dashboard and pull out the light bulb? No! In the same way your body is trying to tell you there is a problem. So taking a medication to hide the problem will in the long run do you no good and quite possibly cause you more issues from side effects. This is when going local to treat the problem comes into play. Locally you can meet with a chiropractor or physical therapist that can help you to get to the bottom of why you are experiencing pain.

Let’s say you head into the office and are experiencing some intense back pain. The physician you have gone to see should evaluate your overall condition, and then recommend some therapies that may work to solve the problem. Keeping in mind that not all solutions may provide instantaneous relief and not all problems are easy to diagnose.

A physical therapist or chiropractor may recommend a combination of therapeutic solutions like decompression or cold laser. In some cases these can provide patients with instant relief depending on their condition. The use of these two different types of treatments when combined can prove to bring about powerful results. In the long run it is the healing of the problem you are having that you want. You do not want to risk further injury by simply trying to mask the issue with quick and seemingly simple solutions. So search carefully and get some good advice. There is also nothing wrong with getting more than one opinion. Keep that in mind the next time you are in need of medical attention.

In Washington State, a woman claimed to had acid thrown in her face and cries that she will never let the traumatic incident destroy her life. Most people have felt sympathy for this poor girl, who used to be a beautiful woman, now disfigured and scarred physically and emotionally. Many showed their heartfelt sympathy donating money and sending in notes of comfort and much love for this young distraught woman. However, a few weeks after this alleged attack, the people were blown out of their minds when they heard the outrageous truth: The injuries of that woman was self-inflicted and everything else was a hoax. The reason for self-injury was merely to seek attention and affection from everyone. The people who gave their utmost affection are now outraged by the news as this woman finally confessed the truth. Experts say that this woman exhibits a symptom consistent with that of Munchausen Syndrome.

Munchausen Syndrome, also known as hospital addiction syndrome, or hospital hopper syndrome is a medical term for a psychiatric condition known as factitious disorders where an individual inflicts injuries and feigns his or her illness in order to be able to seek attention and sympathy for themselves. Medical practitioners often refer to individuals with Munchausen as “frequent flyers” because of their frequent visits to the hospital and clinic just like airplanes fly back and forth to the airport.

This disorder is also related to another form of psychiatric disorder called Munchausen Syndrome by proxy which is a term used to define a kind of abuse of another person, commonly a child or an infant to seek attention and empathy for the abuser. Individuals who manifest Munchausen Syndrome premeditates their injuries by inflicting physical injuries to themselves often to reach a point where they could be hospitalized and treated. They are often motivated to undergo invasive medical interventions such as surgeries and diagnostic procedures, moving on from one hospital to another to look for a new audience after sometime.

These individuals may also make false claims about their achievements ad relations to famous people to intensify their stories. Medical experts say that most psychiatric disorders originate from a complex series of biological risk factors like genetics and life experiences. However, there is little evidence that heredity plays a role in Munchausen Syndrome.

Researchers are still looking for answers and are still studying the exact cause of this illness. Munchausen Syndrome is not the same as hypochondriac disorders in which the patient thinks that he or she is ill. Hypochondriacs have strong delusions about the illnesses they claim to have while people with M?nchhausen patients know that they are not sick, but they want to assume a sick role. Often times, individuals with this condition become experts at feigning their medical diseases or inflicting real injuries upon themselves, that doctors are finding it difficult to discern whether their diseases are real or not.

Individuals manifesting Munchausen Syndrome exhibit symptoms including fabricating stories often dramatic in nature. They would also manifest physical symptoms which are often self-inflicted and inconsistent with some of their false claims. They might also fake some physical symptoms such as seizures or passing out.

They also have tendencies to interfere with their wounds such as reopening sutures. From time to time they might also tamper with some medical procedures and laboratory tests to screw results and readings. People with Munchausen Syndrome are well aware of the fatal complications as a result of their actions. However, their compulsions to do so are so overwhelming that they are unable to stop self-destruction. If you think you know someone who is struggling with this psychiatric condition, it may be of help to have a gentle conversation with your concerns disregarding any form of judgmental notions. Offer emotional support and help them find the right treatment.

Tendonitis, sometimes called tendinitis, is inflammation or irritation of a tendon. The tendon is any one of the thick fibrous cords that attach muscles to bones. Tendonitis is sometimes confused with tendinosis, which has similar symptoms but requires a different treatment. Tendinosis should refer to the large-scale acute injuries accompanied by inflammation. The condition causes pain and tenderness just outside a joint. Tendonitis can occur in any of your body’s tendons, but is most common around your shoulders, elbows, wrists, knees, and heels. It is usually referred to by the body part involved, such as Achilles tendonitis (affecting the Achilles tendon), or patellar tendonitis (jumper’s knee, affecting the patellar tendon). Other common names are tennis elbow, golfer’s elbow, pitcher’s shoulder, and swimmer’s shoulder.

Symptoms vary, but usually occur at the point where the tendon attaches to the bone. Pain, often a dull ache or severe pain and local stiffness can be surrounded by a burning sensation that surrounds the entire joint and tendon area. Mild swelling may be present along with tenderness, heat, and redness. You may even have visible knots surrounding the joint. The condition may worsen the following day as the muscles tighten from the movement of the tendon. If the symptoms last for several months, it is probably tendinosis.

Tendonitis can be caused by a sudden injury, but is most likely the result of repetition of a particular movement over a period of time. This can be the result of repetitive motions at work, working on your hobby, or performing sports activities. Older people are more susceptible to tendonitis because as we age, our tendons become less flexible.

Tendonitis can range from mild to severe. To treat tendonitis at home, remember P.R.I.C.E. – Protection, rest, ice, compression, and elevation. Non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS), such as aspirin and ibuprofen (advil, motrin, and others) or products with acetaminophen (Tylenol) may be taken to reduce the discomfort. Topical applications may also help to reduce pain. Rest is a key part in treating tendonitis, but prolonged inactivity can cause stiffness. After a few days, it is recommended that you gently go through a full range of motions.

Most cases of tendonitis respond well to home treatment. If the condition persists for more than a few days, consult your physician. Depending on the severity of your injury, surgical repair may be needed. Without proper treatment you increase your risk of tendon rupture- a more serious condition that may require surgery.

What is Osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis literally means ‘porous bones’ and occurs as a result of calcium phosphate being taken from bones and reabsorbed by the body. This leaves the bones thinner and weaker and liable to fracture especially in an older person.

A typical result is a broken hip. Osteoporosis is most likely to affect men over 70 and women over 50 and resulting fractures can be serious and life-changing. The cause of the disease is still not fully understood but in women is sometimes caused by an estrogen shortage during menopause and in men by a drop in testosterone. Because its results can be so serious it is important to seek treatment. Your doctor can request a bone density test to determine if you have osteoporosis and find out how severe it is.

Effects of Osteoporosis When the disease is in the later stages the fragile bones caused by it often result in a fracture of some type, especially broken wrists, hips and spinal bone, and these fractures can have serious consequences. Fractures in seniors can lead to severe pain and loss of mobility as well as limiting the lifestyle of the person affected. Even after a fracture has healed the pain may be considerable and the challenge is to cope with this pain as effectively as possible. The chronic pain and problems resulting from osteoporosis can occur in the form of stiffness and weakness, muscle tension and spasms. The challenge is to manage the pain in ways that are best for you.

The nonmedication methods below may relieve your pain and prevent it from returning.

Osteoporosis Pain Management Exercising to get rid of pain Exercise releases natural pain killers called endorphins from the brain. Engaging in a regular exercise program also helps you build your strength and increases energy, makes you more flexible and builds muscles that protect the fragile bones, among many other benefits.

Using physical therapy to massage away the pain A massage therapist can do wonders for the pain caused by osteoporosis. Other benefits include relaxation and increasing blood supply.

Joint pain and stiffness are usually the result of a form of arthritis. Stiffness occurs after a period of physical inactivity and it actually refers to the inability to move the joint properly. In the great majority of the cases when pain in the joint is accompanied by stiffness, it means that an inflammation is causing them both. In patients with osteoarthritis, joint stiffness occurs in the morning and usually lasts for about half an hour. In other forms of arthritis, like rheumatoid arthritis or gout, the pain and the stiffness lasts longer. Joint pain and stiffness can also be caused by injuries, tendonitis, bursitis strains and sprains and infectious diseases like mumps, rubella, measles or hepatitis.

Heat and cold treatment, gentle exercise and synthetic drugs like NSAIDs or steroids are usually prescribed for joint pain and stiffness. Patients also find relief in supplements like glucosamine or condroitine sulfate which help rebuild the affected tissue. Vitamins B and C and minerals are also important for maintaining a good health of the joints. Herbal supplements and essential oils are also recommended in case of joint pain and stiffness because some herbs have impressive anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects.

Rumatone Gold oil for instance, provides quick relief from the pain, reduces stiffness and improves the sufferer’s ability to move. It is absorbed fast by the body and diminishes the inflammation of the joint. Not only the oil, but also Rumatone Gold capsules are effective in joint pain and stiffness. Ginger extract, if taken daily, inhibits the release of certain substances that promote inflammation. If inflammation if kept under control, it means that the incidence of pain and stiffness will be lowered.

Clinical studies have reported that ginger extract produces no side effects, even if it is taken for years. Boswelia extract has amazing anti-inflammatory properties, reduces the pain and the swelling and it is also effective in eliminating morning stiffness in patients suffering of osteoarthritis. Besides herbal supplements, essential oils, especially those renowned for their pain killing properties, like lavender or rosemary, are doing a great job in diminishing joint pain and stiffness.

Patients suffering of conditions that lead to pain in the joint or stiffness need to have a healthy diet and to make sure that they consume an adequate quantity of minerals and nutrients. The health of the cartilages and joints directly depend on the mineral and vitamin intake. This is why Epson salt is also recommended. Taking hot baths whit Epson salt will help the body absorb the magnesium in the salt and will improve the condition of your joints. Around 2 cups of salt are needed for a bathtub.

here are literally hundreds of thousands of individuals who will swear by the benefits they have received from chiropractic care. Side effects from chiropractic manipulation are very rare and overall patient satisfaction has always seemed to be very high. But, like any medical or therapeutic procedure, side effects are possible and it is not without some level of risk. For the vast majority of patients a trip to the chiropractor leaves them feeling refreshed and better than ever, the most common side effects are some mild discomfort in the treatment area. For most patients this discomfort does not last more than 24 hours.

The most dangerous side effect from chiropractic treatment is that of stroke after receiving cervical manipulation. While there is some anecdotal evidence to support the idea that these rare occurrences are a direct result of a chiropractic visit, it is hard to find empirical evidence showing a direct correlation between the chiropractic treatment and the resulting stroke or carotid artery dissection. While the studies seem to indicate that an individual is just as likely to suffer from a stroke during their everyday activities as they are to suffer from one as a result from a visit to the chiropractor, it is worth being aware of.

There is some evidence to support the idea that the arteries in the neck undergo a good deal of strain during chiropractic treatment. While this may not be surprising to anyone who has ever had their neck manipulated by a chiropractor, it does not necessarily mean that any long-term damage is caused by these treatments. As with any medical or therapeutic procedure, it is always advised that you go to a highly qualified professional. You can greatly reduce any of risk for injury if you make sure that the individual you are going to is qualified and comes highly recommended by your friends or family.

The risk for injury or side effects is an unfortunate part of virtually every aspect of medical treatment. The overwhelming majority of individuals have a greater risk of experiencing a serious side effect from over the counter pain killers than from a visit to a chiropractor’s office. If you are unsure of whether or not you are healthy enough to undergo a chiropractic manipulation, you should discuss the matter with your family doctor and see if there are perhaps other treatment options that would be better suited for your particular needs.
